Pocket Fire Update: Sedona is open for business. As of July 16 the Pocket Fire burning north of town is 83 percent contained at 27,393 acres, fire activity is minimal after midweek rain, and management has returned to the Coconino National Forest. Some area, road, and trail closures remain in effect near Woody Mountain Road and Lake Mary, and SR 89A is open between Sedona and Fort Tuthill. Oak Creek Canyon is back open, and the canyon needs you: SR 89A through Oak Creek Canyon reopened on July 13 after nearly a month of closure, and firefighters kept the flames out of the canyon entirely. The hit to the businesses along the creek was real; a sampling of canyon businesses reported a combined $743,000 in losses during the shutdown. Monday is the quiet reset day this week. Both festival theatres continue daily screenings of Time and Water, For the Love of a Woman, and Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and an early morning on the Airport Loop trail or a slow browse through the Tlaquepaque galleries beats the midday heat. Tuesday, July 21

Koz Mraz Presents: The Story of the Baron of Arizona | 4:00 to 6:00 PM | Mary D. Fisher Theatre, 2030 W State Route 89A. The stranger-than-fiction tale of James Reavis, the forger who nearly swindled his way into owning most of the Arizona Territory. A great late-afternoon pick during monsoon season; you will be out in time for dinner and the evening light show over the rocks.

Otherwise Tuesday stays mellow. It is a perfect evening for the drive up to Jerome, where the shops stay open into early evening and the town’s cliffside patios catch the sunset over the entire Verde Valley.

Wednesday, July 22

American Heart Association Basic Life Support Class | 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM | Sedona. An in-person certification course for anyone who needs current BLS credentials, from healthcare workers to guides. Register through the listing; walk-ins are not guaranteed a spot.

Wednesday is another quieter one on the calendar.
